Effective January 1, 2001, the Township of St. Clair developed from the former Township of Moore and the former Township of Sombra. The Township of St. Clair is bordered by the City of Sarnia to the north, by the Municipality of Chatham-Kent (Wallaceburg) to the south, Country Road # 26 to the east, and the St. Clair River to the west. The Township of St. Clair covers approximately 400 square miles, with a population of approximately 15,000.

One full-time fire chief, and two full-time deputy fire chiefs administer the direction of six (6) fire stations, comprising of 170 volunteer fire fighters, who respond to fire calls, vehicle accident calls, and medical (with defibrillator) calls in urban, rural, and industrial locations. Each station has a district chief, a deputy district chief, a training officer, a fire prevention officer, and four (4) captains. The fire stations are located in Becher, Brigden, Corunna, Courtright, Port Lambton, and Wilkesport.

The Township of St. Clair has half of the "Chemical Valley" within it's boundaries. These facilities range from heavy petrochemical refineries with polyethylene and polypropylene manufacturing, to a high pressure gas storage, to a nitrogen plant, to the Ontario Power Corporation Lambton Generating Station.

We are members of C.V.E.C.O. (Chemical Valley Emergency Coordinating Organization.) This unique organization brings industrial and municipal fire departments together by combining their extensive resources to successfully mitigate emergencies by providing mutual aid assistance to the refineries that are located in Sarnia and the Township of St. Clair.

The Township of St. Clair Fire Department is actively involved in fire prevention and public education. Our fire prevention services include inspections (routine as well as complaint), site plan approvals, and fire cause investigations. Our public education provides many programs to citizens of all ages. Some of these programs include: TAPP-C, Older and Wiser, Risk Watch, Remembering When, Fire Extinguisher Training, Alarmed for Life, station tours, and fire safety seminars. All our stations are involved in fire prevention week each year. Through our County Fire Prevention organization we have access to a fire safety trailer, Hazard House, and Sparky costume.

The Township of St. Clair fire department has twenty-eight (28) pieces of various apparatus, ranging from a 75 foot telesquirt, to pumper trucks, to water tenders. Six full sets of hydraulic rescue equipment are strategically placed throughout our Municipality. We also have two air filling stations.

SMOKE ALARM FACTS

• Over 90% of residential fires are preventable
• From 1995 to 2004, only 35% of fires had a smoke alarm present and working
• Working smoke alarms must be on every level of the home, including the basement and outside sleeping areas
• Smoke alarms must be replaced every 10 years
• Penalties for ignoring the law range up to $50,000 + up to a year in jail, for individuals and $100,000 for corporations
• Homeowners and Landlords are responsible for complying with the new law by March 1, 2006
• Tenants can also be charged for removing batteries

SMOKE ALARM SAFETY TIPS

• Replace batteries at least once a year
• Test your smoke alarms at least every month
• Make sure everyone in the household knows what to do if the smoke alarm sounds. Develop a home fire escape plan and practice it with the entire household
