Friends of the St. Clair River Looking For Your VoteThe Friends of the St. Clair River were successful in having their project “Remediating the St Clair River Area of Concern approved for inclusion in Shell Canada’s FuellingChange Contest. For this, the group will receive $10,000 and if selected by voters, they could receive $100,000. FuellingChange is a program to support environmental projects and organizations selected by voters. Shell will grant a total of $1 million per year to projects that improve and restore Canada’s environment. The projects with the most votes at the end of each cycle will receive grants in the amounts of $25,000, $50,000 and $100,000. In total, that's 54 grants per year and $1 million in support of Canada's environment. (source http://fuellingchange.com) In the $100,000 category, there are eight projects. Only two are in Ontario and ours is focused on habitat improvements right here in our own area. We need your vote,” Darrell Randell, President of the Friends of the St. Clair River said. “Through this project we will work with other conservation partners to restore or protect natural habitat areas such as forest, native grasses and wetlands in the St Clair River Area of Concern. It will assist 15 landowners to restore or protect the natural habitats in suitable locations such as headwater areas of tributaries and riparian areas on their properties,” Randell explained. Lambton County and Chatham-Kent both have remaining natural cover at lower than what is recommended. This is cited as an impairment for the St Clair River. Increasing natural cover helps to create wildlife habitat, reduces soil erosion and absorbs nutrients that would otherwise get into our watercourses. Voting is easy, just visit www.fuellingchange.com and follow the instructions. March Break Fun at the Mooretown Sports ComplexThe Mooretown Sports Complex will host several March Break activities, including a recreational swim each day from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. and a public skate each day from noon to 1 p.m. The cost for either of these activities is $2.25 per child, $3.25 per adult, and $6.50 per family. The March Break Day Camp for children ages five through 12 will include swimming, skating, crafts, games and special visitors. The program runs from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., with early drop-off beginning at 7:30 a.m. and late pick-up until 5:30 p.m. available. The cost is $25 per child per day or $100 for the week. A family plan is available. For more information or to register for March Break Day Camp contact the Mooretown Sports Complex at 519-867-2651. Protect Your Family & YouNew FMAlert system provides fast emergency warnings The FM Alert system will allow almost instant communication between the public and emergency personnel. When the program is in full swing, every residence will have a small receiver that can be activated via a radio signal and large public buildings such as schools will be outfitted with larger receivers. When activated, these units sound an alarm, exhibit a flashing red light, and display a brief digital message indicating the nature of the emergency. The township has been divided into eight areas and the system will be instituted in stages, with the most vulnerable areas in Corunna being the first areas to be activated. This system will replace the telephone call system, which proved to be insufficient to the needs of the township. The FM Alert system will be operated in partnership with Blackburn Radio and St. Clair County, Michigan. St. Clair Township Fire Chief Roy Dewhirst says this is ideal since severe storms usually track through St. Clair County first. This allows for a timely warning to be issued and allows residents to take immediate, appropriate action. Each residential unit is worth $30, but the municipality will be subsidizing its purchase by two thirds. The units are be available at the Emergency Services building at the corner of Lyndoch and Hill Streets in Corunna, at the St. Clair Township Civic Centre in Mooretown, or at the Corunna Home Hardware.
